School admission registers are a valuable source for genealogy / family history research. Names below are from my index to Cooktown Boys' State School admission registers, Jan 1885 to May 1889. Queensland State Archives also hold registers for later years. Details given in the original source are date of admission, pupil's name, age, residence (usually a street), religion, parent's occupation, month/year in each class, and month/year of leaving or returning to the school (but in a few cases some information is missing because page edges have crumbled).
Explanation of names below:
- Date range: Jan 1885 - May 1889.
- Scroll through the list. Names may have been spelt incorrectly in the records.
- Some names are missing because part of the register has not survived.
- '...' means that some letters are illegible.
- A question mark means that handwriting is difficult to decipher and the spelling is in doubt.
- Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
- Apostrophes have been removed from names such as O'KEEFE.
- For names below, I can order photocopies of the original records.
