Headstones and monumental inscriptions in cemeteries and churchyards provide vital information for genealogy and family history. We need to transcribe that information before it is destroyed by the weather, vandals, cemetery closures etc.
Names from some of my cemetery transcriptions are on my Web site. Older or more recent transcriptions, with headstones that were not visible or not legible when I was there, may be held by genealogical libraries or historical societies. Many cemeteries have been transcribed multiple times, sometimes decades apart, and one transcription may be more complete or more accurate than another. Don't rely solely on the Internet! Look for other versions held by libraries and societies.
