In some cases there may be a file in this series even if the patient's Public Curator insanity file was destroyed.

To obtain maximum information about mental asylum patients you must use all relevant sources, such as:

• Mental asylum case books 1860-1931 (usually give reason for admission)
• Public Curator insanity files
• Supreme Court insanity files 1885-1901
• Colonial Secretary's Office in-letters
• Annual Reports of asylums
• Police Gazettes
• Justice Department inquest files
• Premier's Department undertaking files 1929-1955 (re fares)
• Police Station watchhouse charge books, telegram books, and diaries of duty and occurrences
• Court of Petty Sessions police charge bench books, deposition books etc.
• Prison records
• Supreme Court equity files, divorce files, originating summonses, miscellaneous files etc.
• Dunwich Benevolent Asylum records (if the patient also spent time at Dunwich, which was not a mental asylum).

The Archives charge $1.20 per page for copies, and there is a fee for my time (visiting the Archives, ordering the bundle, locating the relevant file, ordering photocopies, collecting them later, and posting the material to you).

* For photocopies, the cost depends on file size and handling time, which I cannot predict in advance. Send a deposit of $35 - $60 per file, according to your budget. If the work costs less, the surplus is refundable. If your deposit is not sufficient to cover the cost, I will email you to discuss your options. For common names, tell me (if known) your subject's places of residence, death date, and next-of-kin.

* If you just want source references so that you can get the copies yourself, the fee is $10 per surname.
