Qld State Archives hold Public Curator insanity files for people admitted to mental asylums including Goodna (Woogaroo or Wolston Park), Toowoomba (Willowburn) and Ipswich (Sandy Gallop). These files usually give dates of admission and discharge or death, and many include letters from the patient or his/her relatives. Because the relatives were asked to pay maintenance, there is often information about them too (addresses, biographical data, employment history, financial or social circumstances, police reports etc.) Occasionally there are certificates, wills, lists of property, divorce details etc.
My experience is that when looking for insanity files, what matters is the date of ADMISSION to a mental asylum (not the date of death). The initial admission date usually determines which index(es) to search, and access conditions, though there are some exceptions.
Qld State Archives hold three 'indexes' to Public Curator insanity files:

'Public Curator insanity files' are not the same as 'Goodna case records' (which contain medical data and are only available under Freedom of Information). Nor are they the same as 'records of Dunwich Benevolent Asylum' (Dunwich was a benevolent asylum, not a mental asylum). Photocopying Service: As a professional genealogist, I can visit the Archives and order photocopies. The cost depends on file size and handling time, which I cannot predict in advance. Send a deposit of $35 - $60 per file, according to your budget. If the work costs less, the surplus is refundable. If your deposit is not sufficient to cover the cost, I will email you to discuss your options. Tell me (if known) the subject's marriage/death dates, addresses, and names of spouse, parents, children, brothers, sisters or other next-of-kin.
