Prisoners in Stewart's Creek Penal Establishment, North Qld

Prison records are often very useful for genealogy / family history. For example, the description register for Stewart's Creek Penal Establishment, Townsville (held by Qld State Archives) usually gives prisoner's name; aliases; ship and year of arrival; where born; religion; occupation; age; height, build, complexion, hair and eye colour; ability to read/write; scars, tattoos etc. (Although a more recent spelling is 'Stuart Creek', the records deposited at the Archives were created when it was 'Stewart's Creek'.)

The names below (with a couple of exceptions) are only for part of 1893-1894 but eventually I hope to index the whole register (1893-1907), plus Stewart's Creek court books which commence 12 Mar 1895. Even without an index, searches are feasible, especially if you can ascertain an approximate year by using indexes to registers of criminal depositions or Police Gazettes.

Explanation of names below:

Date range: part of 1893 / 1894 (with a few exceptions) (1894-1907 still in progress).
'-' or '...' means no surname was stated, or the name is illegible.
A question mark means the handwriting was difficult to read and the spelling is in doubt.
'Ab' = Aboriginal or part Aboriginal; 'SSI' = South Sea Islander or Kanaka.
Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
Apostrophes have been removed from names such as O'BRIEN.
If there is more than one entry for a name, it could mean that the same person is mentioned more than once, or that there were several people with the same name. The only way to find out is to consult the original source.
