I have started indexing Queensland Premier's Department 'undertaking files' 1929-1955. These records are useful for genealogy and family history, especially if you are researching someone who 'disappeared'. The files concern repayments to the Government for fares for travel by rail or ship. Most journeys were from one Australian State to another, but some undertakings were for fares to or from another country.
Examples: A man wanted to bring his runaway daughter home from interstate. A woman applied to take her three grandchildren to Western Australia. A mother and daughter had come to Qld to give evidence at an inquest and could not afford the return fare. A woman and her granddaughter came from Canada to join relatives in Australia. A woman who had been abandoned by her husband wanted to move interstate. A man wanted his wife to join him in India (the file shows that he later went to Canada and died there). Many applicants (especially during the Depression) were travelling in search of work.
File contents vary, but many include letters and a signed undertaking. Some refer to aliases, criminal trials, deaths, mental asylum admissions, illegitimate children, immigration or emigration, etc.

| Copying service. Allow up to 8 weeks for a reply; I am often away for family reasons. | As a professional genealogist, I can (for a fee) order a photocopy of the original source. The Archives charge $1.20/page for copies, and there is a fee for my time (visiting the Archives, ordering the bundle, locating the relevant file, ordering photocopies, collecting them later, and posting the material to you).
* For photocopies, send a deposit of $35 per surname, and tell me your email address. I do not know the file size in advance, but if I find that the total cost would exceed your deposit, I will email you to discuss your options (eg, I could ignore some pages).
* If you just want source references so that you can get the copies yourself, the fee is $10 per surname.
