What's  New?
A 'quick-find' summary of the main additions to my Web sites

(but you should also use Updates Genie)
Updated 9 May 2012

My new email address has been on my Web site for a while, but to see it you may need to refresh/reload the page. My Web pages are moving to my own domain, www.judywebster.com.au.

  • To update and expand the information and advice in my book Tips for Queensland Research, I have published two mini-guides, Researching Illegitimate Children ($2.40) and Researching Queensland Mental Asylum Patients ($3). Those prices apply to payments sent as postage stamps or bank deposit.

  • I am now working on a two-foot-high pile of (1) photocopies to be packaged and posted, and (2) research notes that need to be converted to written reports. Since I returned from the Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry, progress has been slow. I have been away from Brisbane for family reasons plus various genealogy speaking engagements; and I will be out of action for a while after having what I hope will be minor surgery later this week. Your patience is appreciated.

  • Bookings are now open for the History and Genealogy Expo in Brisbane from Mon. 25th to Wed. 27th June 2012. I will be there as a presenter and exhibitor, but I will desert my post occasionally to attend some of the talks, especially those by Audrey Collins from The National Archives in the UK. Expo tickets are cheaper if you book in advance.

  • 'Genealogists for Families' project. This won an award for 'Best New Community Project'. Please join us!

  • Updates Genie has now completely replaced my Newsflash page and email newsletter, and the first three editions are online. It allows you to read my news on the Internet, or receive it by email, or subscribe to an RSS feed - all free of charge. Updates Genie will have genealogy news and tips from all over the world (Queensland, other Australian States, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, USA etc.) You will find out about indexes, Web sites, books, CDs, podcasts, record offices, research techniques, discounts and freebies, events such as family history fairs, seminars and conferences, and lots more. There will also be links to longer articles that I publish elsewhere on the Internet.

  • I often put links to useful Web sites on my Twitter page. You can read the page without joining Twitter.

  • I am now putting research tips and short articles on these locality-specific pages at semi-regular intervals:
  • Last year I assumed the role of carer for my father so that he could continue to live in his own home. Sadly, he passed away a few months ago. I am slowly working my way through a backlog of research requests, although I am still looking after Dad's rural property part-time. Large attachments cause serious problems when I am away, so please check with me before sending email attachments.

  • Do you know Maria JONES? She sent a payment but did not tell me her postal or email address.
July 2010
  • My 'breaking news' often appears first on my Facebook 'Queensland Genealogy' page. Click 'Like' beside the title of that page to have my announcements sent to your Facebook news feed.
May 2010
  • I have now indexed over 3,000 names from mental asylum case books. Case books (which begin in 1860) include many details that are not in Public Curator insanity files.
Feb 2010 Sep 2009
  • Select list of published conference papers now includes those from Preserving the past for the future: Proceedings of the 12th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry (2009). A wide range of topics and geographical areas are covered. If you have British or Irish research, take particular note of the papers by Sherry Irvine and Michael Gandy. Conference papers provide lots of information that is not on the Internet.
Dec 2008
  • More mental asylum patients (insanity files). Names beginning with A - Q are now listed.
Aug 2008 July 2008 May 2008
  • A new edition of the book Tips for Queensland Research has been published. Most chapters in the previous edition have been significantly updated and/or expanded (often with details of additional sources or new indexes); and some extra topics have been added.
Feb 2008 Sep 2007
  • Names of women granted protection orders 1888-1904.

  • I am often unable to send email to Hotmail, Yahoo and some other addresses. If you don't receive a reply: check your 'junk mail', give me a different email address to try, or send a stamped self-addressed envelope with your enquiry to Judy Webster, PO Box 5043, Algester QLD 4115, Australia. My Web site always shows my current preferred and alternative email addresses, which are subject to change. To reduce spam, please do NOT quote my email address in mailing list or newsgroup messages, and do NOT put it anywhere on the Internet. Instead, refer people to my Web site for current contact details.
